What is the role of mental health training in the workplace

Providing mental health training to all employees is an important step towards mitigating the effects of mental illness by raising global understanding of what it is and helping reduce stigma around reporting it. However, our clinical team at MOAI are keen to share their view that mental health first aid training should not be considered as a complete workplace wellbeing solution.

Mental health first aid training does not

  • Count as a complete workplace mental health strategy

  • Qualify individuals as therapists or counsellors

  • Substitute the requirement for professional assistance

Mental health first aid training does

  • Form a component of a systemic workplace mental health strategy

  • Instruct individuals on non-judgmental listening

  • Reduce stigma around mental health

  • Facilitate conversations around mental illness

  • Provide guidance on identifying early warning signs

  • Enhance awareness of personal and others' mental health

Does training staff in mental health first aid actually help?

A recent study in California demonstrated that training in mental health first aid was helpful in a number of ways. Training increased employee confidence in handling mental health issues at work by 88%, while mental health discussions saw an 87% increase, and signposting procedures were enhanced by 83%. Moreover, the training led to a reduction in mental health stigma, with 64% reporting a positive change, and it also encouraged help-seeking behaviour, which was observed in 59% of cases.

Do I have to do the awareness training to be eligible for the champion qualification?

No, you can just do the awareness training if you want or go straight to the champion course. The only dependency is that to do the MOAI mental health first aid course you need to have completed the MOAI mental health champion course.

Who are the courses for?

We run three courses, the mental health awareness, champion and first aider course. Each of the three courses builds on the knowledge and skills learnt from the previous.

The mental health awareness course is aimed at everyone! It provides the foundation for learning about mental health.

The mental health champion course is aimed at those interested to learn more. We encourage all workplace leaders or those in management positions to complete the champion course in order to make a big difference to the culture of your organisation.

Any mental health champion can go on to complete the first aider qualification, which equips you with the practical skills to help others in need.

What makes the MOAI Mental Health First Aid course different from others?

Our key differentiator from all other mental health first aid courses is that our courses are written and delivered exclusively by RCPsych qualified Psychiatrists. We pride ourselves in delivering the most relevant and clinically sound knowledge, sharing first hand experience in all our courses.

What is mental health first aid?

At MOAI Health, our message is clear: mental health is as important as physical health. The mental health first aid courses are designed to equip people with the knowledge and skills to recognise and respond to mental health difficulties within your organisation or community.

Our team of experts are committed to working closely with you to better understand how we can develop sustainable and meaningful change together
